Free Health Screenings

In association with the Oak Lawn Community Partnership, the Library will host free blood pressure screenings, hearing tests (limit 15) and an "Ask the Heart Experts" forum Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 10-11 a.m. in the lower level meeting rooms.


Celebrating the 200th Birthday of Charles Dickensdickens

In honor of the bicentennial of Dickens’ birthday Feb. 7, the library will hold three movie screenings to celebrate his iconic career and beloved classic works.

Dickens' highly visual narrative style inspired early filmmakers as well as modern-day adaptations. Over 125 years after his death, Dickens’ works are still being screened ... for film and TV and every one of his 15 novels has been filmed at least twice.

✓ Great Expectations (1946) -- 10 a.m. A humble orphan becomes a gentleman with the help of an unknown benefactor. Unrated. 118 min.

✓ Nicholas Nickleby (2002) -- 2 p.m. A young, compassionate man struggles to save his family and friends from the abusive exploitation of his coldhearted uncle. PG. 132 min.

✓ Oliver Twist (2005) -- 6:30 p.m. An orphan meets a pickpocket on the streets of London. From there, he joins a household of boys who are trained to steal for their master. PG-13. 130 min.


Teen Game Night

Teens in sixth through twelfth grades are invited to participate in a free video game night hosted by the  Library on Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 7-8:30 p.m. Students will have open play on Kinect, Wii and Dance Dance Revolution game systems.

Teens may also bring their own controllers and video games (rated up to “T” for “Teen”) to play with others. Snacks and drinks provided. No advance registration. For more information, call the Youth Services Department at (708) 422-4990.


Fab Four: The Beatles Touring Years

Forty-eight years to the date after The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, author and pop culture historian Robert Rodriguez will present “Fab Four: The Beatles Touring Years” on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.

Rodriguez will feature rare videos of songs, interviews and concerts from the group’s Quarry Men days, to their development as a powerhouse in Hamburg, and to the evolution of Beatle mania throughout the world.


Eat & Earn” Fundraiser with Francesca’s on 95th

Local community members can help raise funds for the Oak Lawn Community Library Foundation by dining at Francesca’s on 95th on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Tell your server that you are participating in the “Eat & Earn” fundraiser and 15% of your lunch or dinner bill, excluding tax and tip, will be donated to the Oak Lawn Community Library Foundation.


pasulkaNight Reads

The Oak Lawn Library's new book discussion group – "Night Reads" – kicks off Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7p.m. with award-winning authorBrigid Pasulka's "A book titleLong, Long Time Ago and Essentially True."

Book discussion will be followedby a Q and A with Pasulka, who will read aloud a favorite passage and sign copies of her novel. Pasulka's first novel, winner of the 2010 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, weaves together two remarkable stories, re-imagining half a century of Polish history through the legacy of one family.

No advance registration. Refreshments will be served.


Movie Check-Out for Minors

Beginning  Jan. 2, 2012, parents may visit the Circulation Desk to sign a form giving their children and teens permission to check out movies.

Children and teens will be allowed rental rights on their individual Oak Lawn Library cards, provided a parent or guardian has submitted a signed permission form.

Movie rentals are $0.50 per item for Oak Lawn residents.
