Winter/Spring ProgramsWe are pleased to present the following programs for children aged six months to fourteen years, their parents, and other caregivers. These programs are intended to support the Library mission of providing information, both educational and recreational, in pursuit of life-long learning.
REGISTRATIONPreference is given to Oak Lawn residents and students. Residents of other communities will be placed on a waiting list until it can be determined whether they can be accommodated. Each child's library card must be presented at the time of registration. Programs will be presented in the Youth Services Department unless otherwise noted. Advance registration is required. Registration must be made in person. Children must be the designated age by the first session. Children who have two unexcused absences may be dropped from a program to accommodate those on a waiting list.
STORYTIMES:Books Change Lives!Storytimes are presented on a regular basis to introduce children to literature through picture books, storytelling, fingerplays, songs, poetry, puppetry, and flannel boards. Youth Services Librarians plan these sessions to provide a social environment that will encourage participation in group activities, well disciplined behavior, and respect for others. Children may be registered for only one storytime program per series. New music program for Babies under Special ProgramsTODDLER TIMEThis program offers a group experience in the library for toddlers and their adult caregivers as well as children up to 3 ½ years old who are not ready to attend Preschool Storytime by themselves. Stories in books, songs, games, fingerplays, flannel boards, and puppets introduce literature to the young child through interaction with the adult and other children of the same age. Each series lasts six weeks. One adult must accompany each child, and other arrangements should be made for older or younger children. The child must be two years old and no older than 3 ½ by the first session. There is a limit of 12 adult/child teams per series. Winter Registration begins Monday, January 2 and continues thru January 15 or until full. One series listed below may be selected. PRESCHOOL STORYTIMEPreschool storytime is designed for children who are ready for a social activity on their own for a short period of time. By the age of three, the child is usually able to sit quietly and listen to a brief story and to engage in simple group activities with other children. These sessions will introduce children to new stories and activities, which may be reinforced at home through books, puzzles, recordings, and other materials checked out of the library. Children aged three to five, not yet enrolled in kindergarten, may be registered for this program, which will meet every week for a total of six sessions. Children must be three years old by the first session. Winter Registration begins Monday, January 2 and continues thru January 15 or until full. This program is limited to 25 children. Mondays January 16 to February 20 9:30 to 10:00 a.m.. Spring Registration begins Saturday, March 3 and continues thru March 11 or until full. This program is limited to 25 children. FAMILY STORYTIMEThis storytime is designed for families who have children of various ages who need or would like to have one storytime that all the children could attend together. Stories in books, songs, fingerplays, flannel boards, and puppets will be presented for the enjoyment of caregivers and children from 6 months to seven years of age. Children attending the Tuesday evening program are encouraged to wear their pajamas so they will be ready for bed when they return home. Winter Registration begins Monday, January 2 and continues thru January 15 or until full. Each series is limited to 10 families. One series listed below may be selected. AFTER SCHOOL STORIESStorytelling, read-alouds, songs, and games are included in this series for students in kindergarten through second grade. Children in this age group are most receptive to literary experiences as this is their peak learning period in reading readiness. With so many other activities in a child's life, story time at the library offers an "oasis" of quiet enrichment that may continue for a lifetime. Six sessions meeting every week will be conducted. Winter Registration begins Monday, January 2 and continues thru January 15 or until full. This program is limited to 30 children. Wednesdays January 18 to February 22 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. Spring Registration begins Saturday, March 3 and continues thru March 11 or until full. This program is limited to 30 children. Special Programs
Music for BabiesThis program offers a first-time group experience in the library for babies aged 6 to 23 months and their caregivers. Join musical educator Candy Heitner for a lively session of story, music, fun, and games. Children and adults will participate in sing-alongs, interactive lap and circle games and playing small percussion instruments. Candy accompanies herself on guitar and banjo and has been a children’s performer and music teacher in the Chicago area for the past 10 years. She teaches Infant Toddler Music Classes at The Music Station, Oak Lawn Montessori, Manhattan Park District and The Alsip-Merrionette Park Library. One adult must accompany each child. The child must be six months old, but not yet two, by the first session. Enrollment is limited to 30 adult/child teams. Lower level meeting room. Donuts with DaddiesEnjoy some daddy-daughter time or a guys’ outing at the Oak Lawn Public Library. Children ages 3 to 8 and the special men in their lives are invited to join us for stories, a craft you can make together, and delicious doughnuts. Registration is required. Lower level meeting room. Saturday February 4 11:00 to 11:30 a.m.
Muffins with Mommies(With apologies to Laura Numeroff…) If you give a mommy muffins, she’s going to bring a child (ages 3 to 8) to share them. If you bring your child or grandchild to the library, they’re going to want some stories and a craft. And if you come for stories and a craft, everyone gets a muffin! Registration is required. Read to RoverChildren ages 7 and older can practice reading aloud to a furry, nonjudgmental audience. Sign up for a 15-minute time slot from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on three Saturdays; children sign up for each month separately. Time will be made available for special needs children. Dogs are provided by Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy of Chicago. Registration is required for this program. Lower levbel meeting room. The Green TeamsStart 2012 off on a green note! Students in grades 1 to 5 will morph into unstoppable green teams! Each month, teams will explore new ways to protect their environment. They will create action plans, play games, make a craft & receive completion badges. Environmentalist Emily Kenny will lead this series of hands-on programs which were based on ideas developed by the US Postal Service. Registration is required and limited to 30 participants. The Write StuffYoung writers in grades 3 to 5 meet to try simple creative writing projects. Each session is self-contained – there is no homework and no ongoing projects (unless you are inspired). Registration is required. Limit 20. Tuesday January 10 New and Improved 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Impress your friends and fool your enemies as you write your own advertisements. Satisfaction guaranteed! (Guarantee void in Illinois) Tuesday February 14 I Love a Mystery 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Get clued in on how to make a mystery story. Tuesday March 13 From Bad to Verse 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Explore poetry and puns until you can’t stanza it anymore. Tuesday April 10 Draw Me a Picture 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Using cartoons to talk about making stories. CHESS CLUBCome to the library and play chess with others! Instructions will be provided. Beginners as well as experienced players are welcome. Bring your own chess set and clock if you have one. This program is for children in third to 10th grade. Read to Succeed: Chicago WolvesThe Youth Services Department, along with the Chicago Wolves hockey team, is offering a reading incentive program for independent readers through eighth grade. Registration begins Monday, January 2. Participants are asked to read three library books between January 2 and January 31 to receive a prize. One prize will be awarded per child. Piggie PartyWe’re having a pig party (with a few Elephants thrown in for good measure)! National Pig Day is in March, and who can resist that cute pink snout? So let’s put on our pig ears and have an oink of a good time! Kids ages 2 to 7 years old and a care giver are invited to create pig crafts and play pig related games! Egg Decorating Program!The incredible, edible egg! But eggs aren’t just for eating, they’re for decorating too! Drop-in and decorate an egg for spring. ALL AGES – up through grade 8 are welcome. Tables and materials will be set up by age range. Kids under the age of 8 must have a care giver present with them at the program. Registration is NOT required for this program. Read ProgramCurious young children, ages 2 to 7 years old, can improve their literacy skills by reading with their parents in our “Curious? Read!” program. MOVIES at the LIBRARYJoin us for fun family films during school holidays. All movies will be held in our lower level meeting rooms from 2 to 4 p.m. No registration is required. Monday, January 16 Dolphin Tale (PG, 2011) 112 minutes The amazing true story of a brave dolphin and the compassionate strangers who banded together to save her life. Monday, February 20 Rio (G, 2011) 96 minutes Blu is a domesticated macaw who never learned to fly; Jewel is a wild macaw who knows her way around. Animal Awareness Sunday, January 29 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Ages 3 and up Animals for Awareness is an animal shelter located in Palos Park, Illinois whose mission is to take in wild and exotic animals that cannot be cared for at other dog and cat shelters and to provide educational programs. At their program they will bring a variety of animals including an alligator, a parrot, a snake, a kinkajou and a Canada lynx. There will be petting opportunities for audience members. Whether you're into the furred, scaled, feathered or shelled, Animals for Awareness is bound to have an animal that you'll fall head over heels in love with during this fun educational program. Donations of canned or fresh mixed veggies and mixed fruit will be gratefully accepted! Teen Tech Week - Hack the WebLearn some of the basics of web design this Teen Tech Week. Junior Friends of the LibraryVolunteers, in grades 6 to 12, assist the adult staff with displays, programs, and other special projects in the Youth Services Department for work experience and required service hours.
